I’m a humanist and I see both politics and religion as ways in which humanity has tried to organise its collective life. Historically they are intertwined and have often supported each other. The Queen’s role as head of the Anglican Church is one small residue of this.
The very word “ religion”comes from the Latin “ religionem”, meaning “respect for what is sacred”, “reverence for the gods” and/ or “ conduct indicating a belief in a divine power.” Many of the meanings we now associate with this word, did not come into use until the 11th century, with an expansion in the formation of monastic communities… “Politics” originally comes from the Greek “ politicos” meaning “ of, for or relating to citizens. ( Just think of the expression “ hoi polloi”, which means “ the people” i.e. in Greek terms:citizens).
(Spirituality) ..needs to be the basis for politics and religion which have a common purpose to support, nourish and encourage human development at every level personal, and social and which respects life in all its forms and stages.
